Seven Brown, Goldstein & Levy attorneys presented at the 2024 Jacobus tenBroek Disability Law Symposium, hosted March 21 to 22 at the National Federation of the Blind Jernigan Institute in Baltimore. BGL was proud to once again sponsor the event as a longstanding partner of the NFB.
The annual symposium is regarded as the leading disability law conference in the United States, bringing nationally renowned disability rights advocates together. This year’s symposium theme was “The Right of People with Disabilities to Live in the World: Emergent Barriers and Unrealized Potential.” The two-day program included interactive workshops and plenary sessions that explored intersectional representation in the disability rights community.
BGL attorneys Monica Basche, Lauren DiMartino, Kobie Flowers, Eve Hill, Anthony May, Jamie Strawbridge, and Jessie Weber and all presented at the symposium, sharing valuable information with attendees and demonstrating why they are considered authorities in their respective fields of civil rights law.
The presentations included:
- “Algorithmically Excluded: Artificial Intelligence, Disability Discrimination and Employment,” presented by Anthony May
- “Creating Self Advocates: How Attorneys Can Assist in Successful Transitions to a More-Independent Adulthood,” presented by Lauren DiMartino
- “Holding Police Officers Accountable Under the ADA in a Post-Cummings World: Lessons Learned from Montgomery v. District of Columbia,” presented by Eve Hill, Kobie Flowers and Jamie Strawbridge
- “How to Develop and Win Disability Rights Damages Cases in a Post-Cummings World,” presented by Jessie Weber and Jamie Strawbridge
- “Recent Advocacy for Prisoners with Disabilities,” presented by Monica Basche
- “Transgender Rights are Disability Rights: Protecting Incarcerated Transgender Women and a New Frontier for the ADA,” presented by Eve Hill
Each year, the Jacobus tenBroek Disability Law Symposium examines issues, explores strategies, and pursues Jacobus tenBroek’s goal of integrationism—economic opportunity, social equality, and personal dignity for ourselves and all members of our disability rights community. The annual event honors the legacy of Dr. Jacobus tenBroek who founded the National Federation of the Blind in 1940.
BGL’s work with the NFB extends as far back as 1986, when Founding Partner Dan Goldstein first took on the role of the organization’s counsel. He remained the NFB’s counsel until his retirement in 2017 and was the first lawyer to successfully argue that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) applied to the virtual realm. Following his retirement, Partner Eve Hill leads BGL’s work on behalf of the NFB. Eve is one of the country’s leading disability rights attorneys. She also co-leads Inclusivity, BGL’s Strategic Consulting Group, which helps businesses and organizations achieve compliance with the laws supporting the rights of people with disabilities.
