Welcome to another installment of our “Beyond the Courtroom” series: a recap of recent events our attorneys and staff have attended. From conferences and lectures to summits and symposiums, the BGL team is proud to stay connected to legal and local communities.

Lauren Kelleher attended “A Dinner for Democracy” on September 25, benefitting the ongoing work of the non-profit law firm Democracy Forward. The firm represents Baltimore in active litigation against the federal government, recently overseeing a lawsuit ensuring that Congresspeople can access ICE detention facilities. The benefit included a keynote address from Baltimore City Solicitor Ebony Thompson, along with remarks from Democracy Forward staff members.

On September 23, Monica Basche spoke with a group of 10 public interest law externs at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law. The externs, mostly second- and third-year law students, currently work in government, public interest, and judicial organizations. During her conversation, Monica discussed opportunities she had as a student at Carey Law, her post-graduate clerkship, and her work at BGL and across the Maryland legal community. Thank you to Professor Teresa Schmiedeler for hosting!

BGL sponsored the National Federation of the Blind of Maryland’s Annual Crab Feast on Friday, September 19th. The annual fundraiser provides proceeds to the John T. McCraw Scholarship Fund, established by the NFB-MD to promote post-secondary educational opportunities for blind students in Maryland.

BGL also sponsored the kickoff event for the University of Maryland’s Innocence Project Clinic, hosted on September 17. Students in the clinic will represent clients who maintain their innocence but have been convicted of serious crimes in Maryland state courts. We look forward to continuing our support of the Clinic, which aligns with our mission to rectify wrongful convictions for our clients across the state. Neel Lalchandani attended the kickoff event.

On September 17, Anisha Queen participated in the Maryland Access to Justice Commission’s (A2JC) annual retreat. A2JC’s mission is make the civil justice system accessible, equitable, and fair for all Marylanders by uniting leaders to drive reforms and innovations through coalitions, advocacy, reform, and equity.
