Brown, Goldstein & Levy partner Dana McKee, chair of the firm’s family law practice, was featured as a legal authority in the September issue of The Daily Record’s Maryland Family Law Update, where she discussed the growing influence of artificial intelligence on attorney-client relationships in family law.
Drawing on her own experiences, Dana cautioned against placing too much trust in AI-generated legal guidance. In one case, a client used ChatGPT to make revisions to a marital settlement agreement. While some of the client’s proposed edits were reasonable, others were not. Upon questioning the client about his proposed edits, Dana discovered that they had been AI-generated. She explained that when clients fail to disclose their reliance on AI, attorneys may mistakenly interpret AI-generated revisions as reflecting the clients’ own preferences.
In another case, one of Dana’s clients, who has a background in law, used AI to inquire about a potential legal issue and received a suggested legal theory to pursue. Although the AI response was not entirely on point and provided inaccurate terminology for the legal theory, its response helped Dana and her client explore an alternative legal approach.
“So, it’s not that reliable, but there is some usefulness to it,” Dana told The Daily Record.
