Partner Greg Care discussed discrimination law and preventing discipline at the Student National Medical Association’s Annual Medical Education Conference.

Brown, Goldstein & Levy partner Greg Care joined an eye-opening panel discussion entitled “Discrimination and Dismissal: How to Protect Yourself During Residency” at the Student National Medical Association’s (SNMA) Annual Medical Education Conference on April 3.  Greg discussed legal protections that medical students and resident physicians have from discrimination and retaliation, as well as how to prevent and navigate disciplinary issues.

The panel, moderated by Dr. Love Anani, also featured an array of perspectives from practicing physicians (Drs. Joshua Obamedo and Steven Bradley) and an academic leader (Dr. Tyler Smith). The combination of these lived experiences and practical advice gave students and residents a roadmap for being successful and navigating barriers that face doctors of color.

A redux of the panel’s discussion is planned for an upcoming episode of Dr. Bradley’s engaging Black Doctors podcast.

The conference—centered around the theme, “Bridging Generations with Hope: Illuminating the Voices & Vision of the Future of Medicine—offered educational workshops and programs focused on academic and clinical success, professional development and personal growth, bringing together over 3,000 pre-medical students, physicians, alumni, and healthcare professionals from across the country for a vibrant and empowering experience.

SNMA, the conference’s sponsoring organization, is the nation’s oldest and largest independent, student-run organization focused on the needs and concerns of medical students of color. The SNMA works to support current and future underrepresented minority medical students, addressing the needs of underserved communities, and increasing the number of clinically excellent, culturally competent and socially conscious physicians.
