The Maryland State Bar Association and The Daily Record have named attorney Monica Basche a 2023 Leader in Law. She was selected as an awardee from nominations submitted across the state based on her tremendous dedication to the legal profession and selfless, tireless commitment to the Maryland community.
Since joining Brown, Goldstein & Levy in 2019, Monica has built a notable practice representing clients in civil rights cases, including disability rights, housing discrimination, employment discrimination, and prisoners’ rights. Monica also has experience with commercial litigation and business disputes. Monica is part of a team of attorneys, including the ACLU of Virginia and the disAbility Law Center of Virginia, representing the National Federation of the Blind of Virginia and seven individual prisoners, who recently sued the Virginia Department of Corrections and other defendants for violating blind prisoners’ rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act and Rehabilitation Act. In another recent case, Monica was an instrumental part of the BGL team that successfully represented a management services company in arbitration for breach of contract by a medical cannabis growing, processing, and retail business, with damages valued in excess of $25 million. In another case, Monica represented an individual and the National Federation of the Blind in a lawsuit brought under the Americans with Disabilities Act and Rehabilitation Act, challenging systemic discrimination against blind students and alumni at Duke University.
Monica was named as a Maryland Super Lawyers Rising Star for 2023, as well as a Best Lawyers “One to Watch” for Civil Rights Law, Commercial Litigation and Litigation – Labor and Employment for 2022 and 2023. In 2021 and 2022, Monica was named as a Top 40 Under 40 Lawyer by The National Trial Lawyers.
Monica is an active member of the Bar Association of Baltimore City. She previously served as the Bar Association of Baltimore City Young Lawyers’ Division’s Treasurer and as Co-Chair of its Public Service Committee. She also serves on the board of Maryland CASA Association, which trains volunteer Court-Appointed Special Advocates to speak up for the best interests of children who are under the protection of the courts.
