Brown, Goldstein & Levy partner Greg Care recently joined The Black Doctors Podcast and the Student National Medical Association’s (SNMA) The Lounge Podcast to discuss his experience representing physicians and medical residents in residency dismissal and disciplinary matters. The podcast episode follows a joint panel presentation at the SNMA Annual Medical Education Conference earlier this year.
The conversation, hosted by Dr. Steven Bradley of The Black Doctors Podcast and Isabella Ntigbu, Jared Jeffrey, and Dr. Dumebi Okocha of The Lounge Podcast, explored the unique challenges medical residents face throughout their training. Greg was joined by fellow guest Michael Johnson, an attorney who represents physicians in contract negotiations, evaluations, and residency-related matters.
Throughout the episode, Greg shared practical insights into residency contracts, highlighting key provisions residents should carefully review before signing and discussing common issues that can arise during residency training. He also outlined warning signs that may indicate the need for legal counsel, emphasizing the importance of recognizing unequal treatment, inconsistent expectations, or disciplinary concerns early.
Greg encouraged residents to maintain thorough documentation whenever they notice differences in treatment compared to their peers, noting that creating a clear paper trail can be critical if concerns escalate or legal intervention becomes necessary.
Both podcasts are dedicated to increasing awareness of the underrepresentation of minority pre-medical students, medical students, residents, and attending physicians while providing valuable resources and guidance to support their success throughout the medical profession. During the discussion, the hosts highlighted persistent disparities in medical education and training, noting that Black and minority residents comprise approximately 5% of the physician workforce but account for nearly 20% of residency disciplinary reports. The conversation explored the factors contributing to these disparities and the importance of ensuring residents understand their rights and available resources when facing challenges during training.
