Partner Eve Hill was quoted as a national leader in disability rights litigation in an article by the American Bar Association’s Commission on Disability Rights, in which she discusses how pro bono disability rights litigation and partnering with nonprofits help the advancement of disability rights.

Private law firms and nonprofits are critical partners in advancing disability rights. Eve told the Commission that nonprofits help with advancing disability rights cases by bringing with them the knowledge of their membership.

“They are really the source of information, the source of the stories, and the people who are impacted by the issue we are addressing,” she said.

When it comes to pro bono work, Eve chooses cases that will have a systemic impact, to change the systems that are creating the barriers.

For example, Eve is currently partnering with the American Association of People with Disabilities, Deaf Equality, the Center for Protection of Medicare and Medicaid, and the National Federation of the Blind in a case challenging cuts to approximately 7,000 workers under the Social Security Administration, which would limit access to benefits for people with disabilities.

“I hope the case raises the government’s attention to the impact that it is having on vulnerable groups,” she said. “So that these drastic cuts aren’t repeated in other agencies.”

For firms considering where to start when it comes to pro bono disability rights cases, Eve offered some advice.

“Just do it,” she said. “Pro bono disability cases are a great way for junior attorneys to get experience—and a great way to contribute in a meaningful way to your community.”
