Andy Freeman attended the 115th Birthday of Justice Thurgood Marshall celebration at the Baltimore Museum of Art. BGL donated mural of Justice Marshall created by local students.

BGL partner Andy Freeman attended the celebration of the 115th Birthday of Justice Thurgood Marshall, the nation’s first Black Solicitor General and the first Black Supreme Court justice, at the Baltimore Museum of Art on July 2, 2023. He joined over 200 attendees in celebrating the enormous impact Justice Marshall had – and continues to have – in advancing civil rights across the United States.

BGL was proud to donate a painted mural of Justice Marshall created by students at Highlandtown Middle School #215 in Baltimore. The artwork, which is comprised of twenty individual squares, was created after educator Chadrick Shoales taught his students about Justice Marshall during Black History Month. The mural will hang in the Justice Thurgood Marshall Amenity Center alongside a portrait commissioned by prominent artist Ernest Shaw that was unveiled at the event.

The celebration’s activities included an inspiring discussion between civil rights journalist and lawyer Jami Floyd and former President and Director-Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund Sherrilyn Ifill.

Beloved Community Services Corporation was the proud host of the event. Headed by Rev. Dr. Alvin C. Hathaway, Sr., Beloved Community is a community changemaker on the frontline of social, economic and health-related advancements in Baltimore City. The organization’s commercial development projects focus on restoration and rehabilitation of historic sites in Baltimore.
