Anthony May reflects on identity, advocacy, and pride in the legal field in his recently published letter in Trial Magazine’s “Hear Our Voices.”

Brown, Goldstein & Levy partner Anthony May was recently featured in Trial Magazine’s “Hear Our Voices” column, which highlights personal stories from LGBTQIA+ members of the American Association for Justice (AAJ). The column brings attention to the lived experiences, challenges, and identities that shape the broader legal community.

In his essay titled “Unapologetically Me,” Anthony shares a heartfelt reflection inspired by a holiday gift—a coffee mug that sits proudly on his desk. The mug features a simple brown horse labeled “Other Lawyers” beside a vibrant unicorn, labeled “Me,” while dancing and spinning joyfully. This lighthearted image serves as a powerful metaphor for Anthony’s experience navigating life and the legal profession as a member the LGBTQIA+ community.

Through his letter, Anthony candidly reflects on growing up and discovering his identity—not only as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, but as a lawyer who brings that identity into the courtroom. He explores how experiences and traits that once made him feel as though he had to hide parts of himself (his energy, his dramatic flair, and his authenticity) have become assets in his legal practice. These qualities now fuel Anthony’s advocacy, strengthen his courtroom presence, and allow him to connect deeply with his clients.

Anthony closes his essay with a moving message to the next generation of legal professionals:

“No matter what happens, no matter how hard some try to silence the music, I hope I dance enough to inspire the next generation of unicorns—whatever shape or form they may take—to spin along with me.”
