Partner Anthony May spoke about discrimination in the age of artificial intelligence as a panelist at the National Employment Lawyers Association’s (NELA) annual convention on June 27. He presented alongside attorneys Max Barack of Garfinkel Group and Same Wehrle of the AARP Foundation. Brown, Goldstein & Levy was also proud to be a sponsor of the NELA Gala Fundraiser to help empower workers’ rights attorneys through legal training, promoting a fair judiciary, and advocating for laws and policies that level the playing field for workers.

NELA is recognized as the largest bar association in the country for workers’ rights attorneys. NELA’s annual convention is often referred to as the “largest gathering of plaintiffs’ employment lawyers on the planet.” The 2024 Annual Convention’s theme was “Forging the Future of Workers’ Rights,” and took place June 26-29, 2024, at the Marriott Philadelphia Downtown in Philadelphia, PA.
During Anthony’s presentation, he spoke about legal strategies for protecting workers as workplace technology advances. From algorithmic discrimination to employee monitoring, Anthony’s session addressed emerging issues facing workers, current cases challenging these practices, and best practices for litigating these innovative cases.
Anthony’s presentation at NELA is not the first time he has been tapped for his knowledge on the intersections of AI and employment law. He has been featured as an authority by media publications, such as The Daily Record, and has presented at various events, including the 2024 CSUN Assistive Technology Conference session, the 2024 National Federation of the Blind Jacobus tenBroek Disability Law Symposium, and the 2023 Maryland State Bar Association Legal Summit Annual Conference and Legal Summit. Anthony also spoke on this topic at the Society of Human Resource Management’s (SHRM) Talent Conference & Expo in April 2024.
Anthony has authored a five-part blog series, Algorithmically Excluded, on the use of AI in employment, the discriminatory impacts of such technology, and the legal rights of employees or prospective employees to be free from such treatment.

In 2019, he was honored as the Young Lawyer of the Year by the Maryland Volunteer Lawyers’ Service (MVLS), where he serves on the Board of Directors and as President of the Community Advocacy Network.
