Brown, Goldstein & Levy proudly celebrates LGBTQ+ Pride Month throughout the month of June. We commemorate those who courageously resisted police harassment and persecution in the Stonewall Uprising and honor the generations of LGBTQ+ individuals who have continued the fight for equality, inclusion, and justice.
Unfortunately, prejudice against the LGBTQ+ community remains, with transgender individuals, particularly youth, under attack. When lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and other individuals experience discrimination, BGL attorneys draw on decades of experience successfully advocating for civil rights to provide knowledgeable and passionate representation. We represent LGBTQ+ clients in all areas of the law.
In April, we obtained a precedent-setting victory on behalf of a married gay employee who challenged Catholic Relief Services’ withdrawal of health insurance benefits for his husband. This win was the first to apply new law regarding the Maryland Fair Employment Practices Act’s religious exemption.
In February, we won a temporary restraining order on behalf of three transgender women in federal correctional facilities, successfully challenging the Trump Administration’s Executive Order that would have transferred them to men’s facilities and ended their access to gender-confirming healthcare.
We are also proud to partner with other organizations in the fight for LGBTQ+ equality. For example, we have worked with FreeState Justice, Maryland’s statewide LGBTQ+ legal services and advocacy group, to provide pro bono representation to LGBTQ+ individuals seeking name and legal gender marker changes, asylum protection, and legal representation in cases involving employment and health care discrimination.
Since its founding over four decades ago, BGL has held itself to the highest standards of inclusion in all our work. We understand that a focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging—including accessibility—fosters a collaborative, creative environment that harnesses each person’s strengths and unique perspectives to the fullest to achieve the best results for our clients. Brown, Goldstein & Levy is proud to continue our work advancing the rights and full equality of the LGBTQ+ community.
