The law firm now known as Brown, Goldstein & Levy was born in 1982 when Dan Goldstein, fresh from prosecuting corrupt politicians in the Baltimore U.S. Attorney's Office, began sharing office space with Chris Brown, a tenured professor at the University of Maryland School of Law and former Legal Aid lawyer. Dan was looking for an alternative to the large corporate law firm where he had practiced before becoming a prosecutor. Chris, who had already argued three cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, wanted to bring the passion and analytical skills he had developed as a public interest lawyer and academician to the legal problems faced by private clients. Together, their vision was to establish a successful law firm, committed to rendering top-notch legal services to a broad range of clients, without sacrificing the deep sense of community and social responsibility that was important to both of them.
Chris and Dan formalized their relationship in 1984, establishing Brown & Goldstein. Their practice involved constitutional and civil rights litigation, plaintiff's malpractice and personal injury cases - many on behalf of young children poisoned by lead paint - and "white collar" criminal defense. They also represented clients in commercial litigation, notably including the defense of directors and officers of failed financial institutions.
In 1990, Andy Levy joined the firm, which then became Brown, Goldstein & Levy. Andy had been a partner at one of Maryland's large corporate law firms, where his practice included commercial and criminal litigation of virtually every stripe. Andy was looking to join a firm where he could exert more control over his practice, and do more work on behalf of plaintiffs.
Brown, Goldstein & Levy has now grown to twelve lawyers, but we work hard to retain the same passion and ethic that led Chris and Dan to begin practicing together 20 years ago. Our peers have recognized us by including our lawyers in Best Lawyers in America, electing two of us Fellows of the American College of Trial Lawyers, and naming another of us Maryland Trial Lawyer of the Year. Our firm was named Maryland Pro Bono Firm of the Year by the Maryland State Bar Association and has an "AV" rating (the highest possible) in the Martindale-Hubbell Lawyers Directory.
